It means we believe in freedom, as more than merely a cliché. <BR><BR> We believe you have the right to live your own life as you choose, and others have the equal right to live <I>their</I> lives as <I>they</I> choose. It's not complicated.<BR><BR>We believe freedom leads to peace, progress, and prosperity, while its opposite -- oppression -- leads to war, terrorism, poverty, and misery. <BR><BR> We believe it's preposterously stupid to hate people because of their appearance, their race or nationality, their religion or lack of religion, how they have sex with other consenting adults, etc. There are far more apropos reasons to hate most people. <BR><BR> We believe in questioning ourselves, our assumptions, each other -- and we especially believe in questioning authority (the more authority, the more questions). We believe obedience is a fine quality in dogs and young children, but not in adults. <BR><BR> Like America's right-wingers, we believe in individual responsibility, hard work to get ahead, and stern punishment for serious crimes. We believe big government should not be blindly trusted.<BR><BR> But unlike most right-wing leaders, we mean it. <BR><BR> Like America's left-wingers, we believe in equal treatment under law, war as a last (not first) resort, and sensible stewardship of natural resources. We believe big business should not be blindly trusted.<BR><BR>But unlike most left-wing leaders, we mean it. <BR><BR> Like libertarians, we believe it's wrong and <I>reprehensible</i> to arrest people for what they think, believe, look like, wear, eat, smoke, drink, inhale, inject, or otherwise do to themselves. <BR><BR> But unlike many libertarians, we're not obsessed with the gold standard, we don't believe incorporation is humanity's highest achievement, and we don't believe everything in life comes down to dollars and cents. We've read and enjoyed Ayn Rand's novels, but we understand that they're works of fiction.<BR><BR> We're skeptical, and we're sick of so-called 'journalists' who aren't skeptical at all. <BR><BR>A reader asks, what are our solutions?<BR><BR>We propose no solutions except common sense, which is never common. We like the principles of democracy, and the ideals broadly described as 'American'. But it ought to make you angry, and it certainly will provide fresh enthusiasm for all the ongoing recall petitioners. It just makes it even more obvious, that Gov Scott Walker and his cronies see themselves as above the law. <BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It's a little bit tedious and obvious to explain this, but the reason we have elections and courts is because we like to think that's the civilized way. As a general consensus, the American notion is that it's better to pursue justice through ballots and courts than through bullets and violence. If you think it's <i>bad</i> to take the law into your own hands, you're supposed to support concepts like the legal process. Ignoring court rulings is rather like ignoring election results &mdash; it's stupid and counterproductive, it's constitution and democracy denial, and it's literally un-American.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; The Wisconsin protests continue, though they're no longer deemed newsworthy. Among opponents of the Governor's Tea Party agenda (that is, anyone who believes in liberty and justice for all) the strategy involves pushing recall petitions against eight Republican state Senators eligible for removal from office, and just as urgently, <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.americablog.com/2011/03/wisconsin-supreme-court-candidate.html">un-electing state Supreme Court jackass David Prosser</A>. Prosser is a total Tea Bagger, while his opponent, JoAnne Kloppenburg, seems like a reasonable human.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We've already voted for Kloppenburg (absentee ballot in the mail). If you're in Wisconsin, I urge you to support Kloppenburg, because if she doesn't win and Prosser remains, Republicans will have a 4-3 edge on the state's high court and Walker's Tea Party agenda will have a green light. If she wins I'll pop a cork in joy.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; That said, I'm pessimistic by nature, and Prosser beat Kloppenburg by thirty points in the recent primary election. I seriously doubt that the people of the state can be educated enough about the nuttiness of the incumbent to turn around a 30 point margin by election day (a week from Tuesday), so I'm looking at the Prosser-Kloppenburg election as an early indicator of outrage &mdash; if Prosser wins by just five or ten points, that would suggest that 20-25% of Wisconsin is furious enough to back the looming recall efforts, and that would be pretty good news. <BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; President Obama, meanwhile, has finally said something in support of workers' rights. He's <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/theoval/post/2011/03/obama-century-old-fire-was-a-galvanizing-moment-for-unions-worker-safety/1">against the Triangle factory fire</A> of 100 years ago. Good to know.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; Republicans have decided that <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.americablog.com/2011/03/war-on-elizabeth-warren.html">Elizabeth Warren is unfit</A> for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the agency she's laid out to protect consumers in financial markets. Warren, if you haven't been paying attention, is one of about three appointments Obama has made that he shouldn't be ashamed of, so she's probably toast. The Republican in charge of the Senate, Scott Fitzgerald, decreed on Monday that the now-returned Democratic state Senators <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://fightingbob.com/weblog.cfm?postID=3802">would not be allowed to vote</A>, then backed down when he became a laughing stock.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And speaking of laughing stocks, the local conservative paper, <i>The Wisconsin State Journal</i>, which has been totally on board with the whole radical right-wing agenda, is now urging Democrats and Republicans to be polite to each other, as though both sides have been equally outrageous, and as though civility is an admirable goal as the Republicans kill people.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And yeah, people will die, of course, when <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.jsonline.com/business/117911229.html">poor, old folks are forced to pay more for their prescriptions</A>. Some of them won't have the money, so they'll stop taking their drugs, and they'll die sooner. Hard to say, but probably not much longer.<BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I've been a political activist for most of my adult life, so I've seen authentic violence from protesters and (much more often) I've seen police abuse their horseback position and superior armor to corner and gas peaceful protesters. I've seen protesters get violent, usually in self-defense, and (much more often) I've seen instigated anger caused by phony protesters planted by the opposition (this is so routine, Gov Walker casually admitted he'd "considered" it). From my own experience picketing and protesting over the decades I've developed a strong sense that <i>peaceful</i> protest is always to be preferred. I am old, brittle, set in my ways, and un-insured enough that you couldn't possibly talk me into violence. But it's not about me.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Republican budget plan in Wisconsin is a matter of life and death &mdash; in addition to virtually ending public unions (private unions are next, of course) and taking literally hundreds of dollars out of ordinary working people's pockets every month, Walker's plan cuts back on life-saving BadgerCare (Medicaid) and reduces access to other vital aid programs, among many other cruel incidentals. For many of the protesters, these things are a serious stab at their survival and the survival of their loved ones. A lot of the people protesting are brand new to activism, and they might not share, understand, or give a hoot about the principles of non-violent protest.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; So will there be violence from the protesters? Of course there will be. These are ordinary people, not Mahatma Gandhi idealists. If you push ordinary people far enough and hard enough, threaten their livelihoods, lives, and loved ones, there's probably going to be some pushing back. Sad to say it and I hope I'm wrong and I advise against it, but don't be surprised if there's a violent response to the Republicans' attacks. This is infuriatingly wrong, of course, just morally, but it's also illegal in at least two ways. First, there's supposed to be 24 hours of public notice before such votes. And second and more obviously, under state law the Senate can't act on fiscally-related matters without a quorum. With the Dems gone there can be no quorum, but the Republicans are claiming that this isn't fiscally-related, which is flat-out absurd but in keeping with their constant kookiness and cruelness. It's probably also illegal in more ways I'm as yet unaware of.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I'm typing and posting this on Wednesday night, then headed downtown to the protests, which I'm certain have already begun.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This will not stand, and if I know my Wisconsin it virtually ensures that the recall of Republicans in the state Senate will be successful, and that the recall of Gov Walker (by law, he can't be removed from office until early 2012) will follow in early 2012.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; When we don't have the time or energy to post an update (or hell, even when we do) you ought to check out <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.first-draft.com/2011/03/everybody-hates-scott.html"><i>First Draft</i></A>. Republicans have ordered <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt-and-politics/article_8d9ad090-45bd-11e0-bf68-001cc4c03286.html">the arrest of Democratic Senators</a>, which is probably illegal, and another judge has ordered the capitol <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt-and-politics/article_e1975d48-45cd-11e0-bcc6-001cc4c03286.html">opened to the public</a>, sort of, after the weekend, as the standoff over Gov Scott Walker's worker-squishing legislation continues. And <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-wisconsin-budget-20110304,0,238145.story">it's about much, much more than squishing workers</a>, so if you're sitting on the sidelines, wake the hell up.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; We're progressives, and we have little patience for political operatives who pretend to be progressive but reliably, routinely stab progressive ideals in the back. That's the Democratic Party, at least on the national level.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; But during these ongoing protests in Wisconsin, I have grown more and more impressed by our state's Democratic Party. There really isn't much of a gap between what I would want progressive politicians to do in response to this Republican power grab, and what state-level elected Democrats and the state-level Democratic Party have done.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Win, lose, or draw in this battle, I'm going to remember that the local Democrats were on our side... and I'll remember, too, that on the national level, elected Democrats and the Democratic Party ran and hid, like they always do.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://voices.washingtonpost.com/plum-line/2011/03/gop_ad_distorts_history_of_wi.html">Republicans are lying</A>, of course, about all aspects of everything, but specifically today they're lying in TV ads about the Wisconsin anti-worker legislation. <BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; Democrats in the White House, meanwhile, continue to give Republicans' everything they want, and <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2011_03/028273.php">more than they even ask for</A>.<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; There's <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheat-sheet/item/boehner-lets-cut-entitlements/budget/">no money for Social Security, Medicare</a>, and other programs that help real people, but the gov't still has big bucks for <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_195764.asp">oil company subsidies</a> and <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.nationaljournal.com/daily/dems-decry-continued-funding-for-bridges-to-nowhere--20110302">bridges to nowhere</a>.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; Congressman David Wu (D-Oregon) has <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.slate.com/blogs/blogs/weigel/archive/2011/03/03/catching-up-with-rep-david-wu.aspx">some mental health issues</A>, but he's not in the top twenty for Congressional crazy.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; And again, just for the heck of it: If you or your employer need someone in or near Madison who's reliable, pretty good at clerical duties, someone who speaks, writes, and edits English fluently, doesn't play politics at work, and is willing to seriously give a damn at a low wage, please consider hiring me (Harry). Democratic elected officials and legislative staff have also had some difficulties getting inside.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On Tuesday a county judge <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/01/us-wisconsin-protests-building-idUSTRE7205AR20110301">ordered that the state capitol be opened</A> to the public, since letting the public enter is <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://i.imgur.com/Uumml.jpg">clearly mandated in the state constitution</a>, but the order has been ignored by state officials who kookily claim that they are in compliance. If two people walk out of the building cops will let exactly two people walk in, while throngs of protesters continue shivering in the cold outside.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; County cops are no longer involved in capitol patrols, as the sheriff has said he won't ask deputies to act as <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://host.madison.com/ct/news/opinion/column/john_nichols/article_3cbcbf20-44f6-11e0-affa-001cc4c03286.html">the "palace guard</a>, but plenty of other cops are still blocking the doors, and <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.thedailypage.com/daily/article.php?article=32565&sid=5eef2c36bf6b7c7c3bd9f4d580bde78b">Walker's intent is obviously to mute the protests</a>. Since people can't get in, <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.progressive.org/rc0302b11.html">some Democratic officeholders' offices moved outside</a>, at least temporarily.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Please note, near as I can tell from media coverage, <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://host.madison.com/ct/news/local/govt-and-politics/article_32ad9f18-4406-11e0-94d6-001cc4c03286.html">it's not true</A> that windows in the capitol building are being sealed to keep supplies from reaching protesters. <BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Other than that, it seems that someone's decided that the story has already been covered on a national level, so you can expect no additional "coverage" of any depth on CNN or in Associated Press unless there's violence, which <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://news.firedoglake.com/2011/03/02/right-wing-wisconsin-senator-fishes-for-trouble-with-capitol-protesters/">is a possibility</a>, as it always is when a large crowd is intentionally antagonized.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Still, the general vibe remains calm and peaceful. Here's <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.alternet.org/news/150067/workers%27_uprising%3A_poll%3A_scott_walker_would_lose_an_election_held_today%3B_wisconsin_gopers_outraged_at_prospect_of_compromise/">a good wrap-up of recent events</A> from Wisconsin that you won't see mentioned on the teevee.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; Inside the effectively sealed capitol building, the Governor finally revealed aspects of his planned budget on Tuesday. It's about as obnoxious and stupid as you'd expect, with enormous cuts to education, health care, and other life-and-death social services, while allowing insurance companies to stop covering contraception, and ending the statewide 15-year-old recycling program. Governor Walker's goal is dumber and dumber government, whatever it takes to avoid taxing the wealthy, and to resolve <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703559604576174953308680920.html">a budget crisis that realistically doesn't exist in Wisconsin</a> &mdash; or didn't exist, until Walker took charge.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; People who think workers should have the right to unionize have rallied and fought to preserve that right, but according to media reports, there's <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/important-anniversary.html">nothing to see here</A>. Move along, move along.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; That <i>New York Times</i> piece that Gov Walker liked so much, because it prominently featured a union worker backing Walker's union-busting position, was <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://foknewschannel.com/new-york-times-punkd-by-anti-union-plant/">largely a lie</A>. The guy quoted was never actually a union member, and the "reporter", son of the <i>Times</i> publisher, sure seems to have had an agenda.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; Sorry we were unable to update the site yesterday, thanks to reliably unreliable service from Charter Communications.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; This piece isn't exactly earth-shattering, but it's brief and well-written and obviously true, and it might serve as a bit of a wake-up call for people who just can't understand <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.boomantribune.com/story/2011/2/28/191827/865">why CNN, AP, and their local newspapers and newscasts uniformly suck</A>.<BR><BR> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &diams; It's not surprising any longer to see American leaders on the far-right claiming that <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2011_03/028247.php">the Obama administration is "anti-business</A>." That's the line from 3M CEO and Chair George Buckley, and it's utter bull, of course &mdash; the Obama administration has been depressingly pro-corporate from Day One, and it sits perhaps two degrees to the left of the Bush-Cheney administration in that regard &mdash; but utter bull from the far-right is never surprising.<BR>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; From a <A TARGET="_blank" HREF="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=qkZ&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&defl=en&q=define:fascism&sa=X&ei=RLZuTaSqKdP0gAe79alT&ved=0CCAQkAE">fascist</a> perspective, though, I suppose the Obama administration might look "anti-business," so when I hear remarks like those from Buckley, I just mentally chalk it up with, "Oh, 3M is now being run by fascists.
